Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
What is Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)?
PBS is a multicomponent framework for developing an understanding for behaviours of concern and improving quality of life outcomes for a person as well as that of the people around them (BILD website; Gore et al, 2013.) PBS promotes respect, dignity and inclusion in all areas of life as includes many evidence based good practices.
PBS is founded on the understanding that behaviours of concern serve important functions for those who display them and aims to give people the skills to look beyond the behaviour and identify the cause of distress.
A PBS framework:
- Considers the person and their life circumstances as a whole
- Reduces the likelihood of behaviours of concern occurring by creating physical and social environments that are supportive and capable of meeting the person's needs.
- Is proactive and aims to teach people new skills that not only replace behaviours of concern but also increase the likelihood of developing independent, meaningful and interesting lives.
